EAOT: Concept & Art Direction

Writer's picture: Alia Alia

The main idea of my publication is an A2 sized folded zine that can be opened up with a poster in the back. The reason why I am doing it this was as the objective of my is to explore fabric through the use of waste materials.

Obejective: To explore fabric through the use of discarded or single use items.

Encouraging to reuse items is the main concept of this project, hence why I am creating my

publication in the format of a zine. As the zine may be opened up into a poster, this adds to the fact of encouraging others to reduce, reuse and recycle. The zine is mainly a photography oriented

publication more than a fashion magazine that is trying to market their products.

Main Target Audience: Photography enthusiasts

In my zine I play around with the photos I have taken, on PhotoShop; manipulating, adding

texture and overlapping the photos to make them more eye catching. The overall look and feel for the first zine, is fresh markets. I took photos at different markets including the one located at SS15. Although (most) market vendors sell the same thing, you feel different in different location. Some were open to me taking photos where they even chatted to me along the way whereas some a more conservative and did not want any photographs taken.

On the other hand, the second zine revolves around the newspaper bag that I made. The

pages include newspaper cutouts and textures from the piece of fabric that was made. The

photography direction of this zine relates to the ‘old-school’ - ness of the first zine where this one is more of an ode to the olden days where we our main resource for news was newspapers.

Tying back to the main topic of my project (fabric) I brought along the items that I made to take

pictures which would then be featured in some of the pages of my zine. As they are not intended to be a ‘marketed product’ the zine does not solely consist of the items as it would get repetitive and boring. It is more of a look book per say.

Initially I had a completely different moodboard as I was going for a slight editorial magazine look. After taking the first few photographs and putting them into PhotoShop I felt that there pages were not coming together and a ‘vibe’ was not present. Hence, I came to the decision of a photography based zine. Putting my

editing skills to use, I played around with different blending modes, filters, etc.
