Childhood is a very big part of our lives in which can be either very memorable or quite bitter. A person’s childhood could very much shape their adulthood whether it is good or bad. This research aims to investigate whether or not the interviewee had a happy/memorable childhood.

Mirin, the interviewee, is a 21 year old student who lived in Qatar his entire childhood, 12 years to be exact. According to the body language, it seems that Mirin had a very fun and exciting childhood and is happy to talk about it. Growing up in Qatar attending an international school allowed him to meet people of various ethnicities and backgrounds, constantly making new friends. Throughout his earlier years he got the opportunity to meet one of his best friends who he is still in contact with to this day. He expressed how he had a very athletic childhood, participating in different sports each year which in the end his passion for sports ended on a good note when his team had won during his last year of high school. Mirin was an outdoors person, riding his bike to the mall with friends to camping in the wild for an entire week. His best memory of Qatar was when he had a school trip to a water park, expressing that it was a really fun trip. When asked about his most embarrassing moment, he chuckled explaining how his voice had crack midway through a song he was singing for a play.

To summarise, it is evident that Mirin had a very memorable childhood which somewhat shaped him to become the friendly person he is today. Mirin does not show any type of shyness which perhaps is because he had made friends easily growing up, so therefore did not have any reason to not close up.

Reflection:

I thought that today's activity was fun as it allowed us to mix around with others. Personally I feel that the students in our class do not like to mix around and tend to stay with their 'own' kind. This could be the fact that there is a language barrier which makes it slightly harder for us to communicate with one another so I feel that activities like these help us to get to know each other better and actually have the chance to talk to them.

More over, I think that it is quite important to have small activities like these whether it is in pairs or groups because it enables us to not only get to know our class mates better (I mean we're going to be stuck together for the next two years) but it also allows us to think in different perspectives.

After he mentioned that he lived in Qatar I did steer away from some of my questions. We both grew up in the Middle East so the additional questions I asked were catered towards the environment there to see if we had anything in common!

Interesting! I liked this activity too, because now I get to know Mirin better as well. Didn't know he grew up in Qatar? You had some set questions going into the interview, but I assume you'd expect him to have his childhood in Malaysia. When he mentioned he grew up in Qatar, did it sparked any impromptu questions from yourself? Did you steer away from your 'script' and come up with some impromptu questions that is relevant to that context? Let me know! :D
