For my graduation showcase concept, I initially came up with two themes. Yearbook, and a graphic & patterns theme. Struggling between a more out of the box idea and something I am more comfortable with, I decided to combine the two.
Yearbooks mark the end of a year/chapter whilst capturing significant moments throughout the year. In this case, us graduating marks the end of our studies. Hence the concept of a ‘closing chapter’ came to mind. I looked at references on yearbooks and specifically liked ones from the 70's. Coincidentally, its style had similarities with my graphic/pattern concept. Therefore I thought I could give it a try at combining the two.
An inspiration that lead me to the yearbook concept was class photos where I thought that could be an interesting look for promotion on social media posts. This has been seen in Guess x 88 Risings collaboration as well as Orla Gatland, and Irish singer's album art cover.

This was the first round of ideas I had for a logo. I knew that somehow I wanted to include two eyes to enhance the meaning of 'Hey, look at me'. I came up with the name 'Hey, Look at Me!' as we are graduating designers, we want to catch the attention of future employers. Not happy with the first results, I decided to see if I could sketch out any new ideas.

I then settled on the logo on the right hand side. Often times, graphic designers may work in pixels. So I then created this abstract shape using pixels to place behind the text. This creates some type of border around the text.

With a typeface that is already very square, I thought that having such a crisp shape in the back made it too structured. Hence I rounded off some of the edges to soften it up.
I think that the rounded corners add a more playful interest and also ties back to the 70s yearbook style.

Moving on, instead of creating a completely new pattern, I thought of using the shape from the logo and turning it into a pattern.
The colours I used for the branding
represent some of our attributes but also moods we have went through.
Red - Strength | Intense
Yellow - Youthful | Happy
Blue - Responsible | Upset
Green - Growth | Positive

I then proceeded to sketching out ideas for invitations, display boards etc.

I noticed that yearbooks make use of grids and personally I think that that fits in quite well with the concept I had in mind especially for a display board. A display board is there to highlight projects. Therefore I did not want to create something too busy for the eye. With the main focus on the project images, I kept a column on the side dedicated to the students' information.
