ENDANGERMENT OF CORAL REEFS

According to WWF, corals only take up 0.01% of the ocean while supporting the eco-system up to 25%. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living thing. Besides marine animals seeking shelter, millions of people across the world rely on coral reefs for various things such as protection from dangerous storms. With climate change, over fishing (illegal methods) and pollution, coral reefs are in great danger. Other threats they are facing is tourism. Many people are not aware that humans should not be touching these corals as they are sensitive to our touch (they die after human contact).

ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY

Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals are captured to be put in captivity in which they are mostly put into zoos/aquariums and circuses. These precious animals are kept in tiny cages, suffering, just so that we humans can look at them. These artificial environments are only a small percentage of what the animals are used to. Killer whales have the entire ocean two swim in and are now confined to tanks that are only 50 feet deep (at SeaWorld) when they are used to diving up to 1,000 feet. SeaWorld is known to be very controversial along with movies made about them. Additionally, in some places animals are forced to learn tricks with specific movements that they naturally are not used to such as standing/walking on two legs.

DEFORESTATION

Rainforests are home to millions of species with the Amazon holding a total 10%. Although rainforests take up only 2% of the Earth’s surface, it is inhabited by 50% of the worlds plants and animal species. Apart from providing homes, forests play a major role in our lives as they provide a majority of the Earth’s oxygen. Deforestation is sadly a recurring topic, especially in South East Asia; with indigenous tribes/groups who are native to the forests depends on them to survive.

Impacts:

  • Habitat loss

  • Increased Greenhouse gases

  • Water in the atmosphere (affect the water cycle)

  • Erosion/landslides
